Unemployment Action Center Sees Success at Touro Law

September 26, 2019

Touro Law Center is pleased to announce that once again it is operating a chapter of the Unemployment Action Center (UAC) this year. The UAC is a student-run, non-profit organization assisting New York residents in preparing unemployment benefit claims. Through the Center, Touro Law students are specially trained as unemployment insurance hearing advocates to represent Suffolk County residents in unemployment insurance hearings before Long Island Department of Labor offices, located in both Hauppauge and Garden City, New York. Touro Law is the only UAC provider in Suffolk County representing claimants without charge.

“This program provides an opportunity for students to gain experience advocating for clients while serving members of the community in need,” stated Dean Elena Langan. “These cases have a meaningful impact on both the clients and the students involved.”

Touro’s chapter is being headed by two alumni volunteers Michael Birkmier ’13 and Robert Jacovetti ’06, under the supervision of Thomas Maligno, Director of ProBono and Public Service at Touro Law. Third year student Lauren Johnson is serving as a student leader for the group, arranging trainings and recruiting fellow students to serve as advocates.

Thomas Maligno stated, “Our students and alumni volunteers are dedicated to helping their clients and work hard to win them the insurance they deserve. Since we began offering this service Touro Law students have won hundreds of cases. This year the students have already won five cases for clients and we are looking forward to successfully advocating for many more clients throughout the remainder of the year.”

Clients are referred to Touro Law through the UAC main chapter in NYC. For additional information, please contact https://uacny.org/.
