Biography
Michelle Caldera-Kopf is the Staff Attorney in Touro Law Center’s Civil Rights Clinic, where she represents people with mental illness in federal civil rights cases. Before joining the Clinic, she spent four years as the William R. Davis Clinical Teaching Fellow at the University of Connecticut Law School, where she supervised students representing asylum seekers in before the immigration courts, and taught Asylum Law and International Human Rights Law. She spent four years at the New York Association for New Americans, representing immigrants at all levels of the immigration process, including before the Immigration Service, in Immigration Court and before the Board of Immigration Appeals. Her practice focused mainly on asylum, Violence Against Women Act self-petitions, and on naturalization for people with disabilities. She has also served as an Instructor at the Nizhny Novgorod State University Law School, in Russia, and as the Leonard H. Sandler Fellow at Human Rights Watch. She graduated from Claremont McKenna College, in California, and from Columbia Law School in 1998. Before law school, she served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Craiova, Romania.
