Project P.A.T.C.H.
Project P.A.T.C.H. (Participatory Awareness Through
Community Help) is a partnership among the
Law
Center
, the
Northport-East
Northport
School District
, the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) Law Youth and
Citizenship (LYC) program, and the New York State Education
Department (SED). The
purpose of LYC is to:
-
train teachers to use law-related education
methodology;
-
develop and distribute law-related education
materials for teachers;
-
involve attorneys and judges in educational
programs, both in and out of the classroom; and
-
provide assistance to schools to teach students
about the law and government and encourage active citizenship.
The
Law
Center
has been working with the Northport-East Northport School
District Project P.A.T.C.H. for over fifteen years. Touro has:
-
arranged for faculty members to teach in middle
school and high school classes;
-
developed a
library of age and grade-appropriate law-related materials for
use in high school classes; and
-
developed and hosted a virtual law library of
cases and materials relevant to high school law courses on its
website (including the text of the Constitution, selected
United States Supreme Court opinions, summaries of major
constitutional law cases, and a glossary of legal terms).
ADOPT-A-SCHOOL.
The Adopt-a-School Program is supported by two student
organizations, the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) and
the Latino/a American Law Students Association (LALSA),
together with Touro faculty and administrators. Through this
innovative program,
Law
Center
students become mentors and tutors to underachieving and
disadvantaged students at nearby
Huntington
High School
. Other similar
outreach programs are undertaken throughout the school year by
a variety of student organizations.
SUFFOLK
COUNTY
WOMEN'S BAR ASSOCIATION
.
The
Law
Center
provides office space,
meeting rooms, voice and e-mail, and volunteer student
assistants for the Suffolk County Women?s Bar Association (SCWBA),
the Suffolk County Chapter of the Women?s Bar Association of
the State of
New York
(WBASNY).
Hosting the SCWBA is the forerunner of a planned public
interest wing in the
Law
Center
?s proposed new facility
in
Central Islip
,
NY
.
This wing would provide similar space and amenities for
other community groups with law-related missions or purposes. |
