This course explores the origins and present state of the American law of private property. Its principal focus is real estate, although it also touches on the law of personal property. Among the topics covered are the origins of private ownership, the fee simple and life estates, future interests, co-ownership of real property, defeasible fees, the purchase and sale of real property, the title recording system, restrictive covenants and servitudes on land, and landlord-tenant law.
